Yew has always had a deep spiritual significance and is commonly planted around churchyards. Although it is very poisonous it also has strong healing properties and so, perhaps can be seen as a portal between life and death.
These Bi have been made from part of a large male tree (yew trees produce only either male of female flowers) which had to be pollarded for a building project. It is still thriving.
